Our Patagonian adventure begins in El Calafate, the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park. Flying into El Calafate International Airport (FTE), we're immediately greeted by the vastness of the Patagonian steppe. A transfer takes us to our hotel in town, a charming hub with a range of accommodations and services.

The first day is crucial for acclimatization. El Calafate sits at a relatively low altitude (around 200 meters/650 feet), but the surrounding areas involve higher elevations. Taking it easy on arrival helps prevent altitude sickness. We explore the town, visit the Centro de Interpretación Histórica (Historical Interpretation Center) to learn about the region's history and geology, and enjoy a

Today, we experience the highlight of Los Glaciares National Park: the Perito Moreno Glacier. A bus or organized tour takes us to the park entrance, where we pay the entrance fee. As we approach the glacier, the first glimpse is breathtaking. The massive wall of ice, stretching for 5 kilometers (3 miles) across and rising up to 70 meters (230 feet) above the water, is a sight to behold.

We explore the network of walkways and balconies facing the glacier, offering different perspectives of this icy giant. The sounds are equally impressive: the constant cracking and groaning of the ice, culminating in the thunderous calving of icebergs into the turquoise waters of Lago Argentino. Opting for a boat trip closer to the glacier's face offers a truly immersive experience, bringing us face-to-face with the towering ice walls.

After experiencing the grandeur of Perito Moreno, we embark on a scenic bus journey to El Chaltén, a small village nestled at the foot of Mount Fitz Roy. The 3-hour bus ride offers stunning views of the Patagonian landscape, with its vast plains, turquoise lakes, and distant mountains.

El Chaltén is known as the "Trekking Capital of Argentina," and for good reason. It's the perfect base for exploring the Fitz Roy massif. We check into our accommodation and spend the afternoon exploring the village, gathering information about trails, and preparing for our upcoming hikes.

Today is the day we've been waiting for: the trek to Laguna de los Tres, the most iconic viewpoint of Mount Fitz Roy. This is a challenging but rewarding hike, taking approximately 8-10 hours round trip. The trail begins with a gradual ascent through forests and along the Río de las Vueltas.

The final ascent to Laguna de los Tres is steep and rocky, but the view from the top is simply breathtaking. The turquoise lagoon, nestled at the foot of the granite peaks of Fitz Roy, with its jagged spires reflecting in the water, is a truly awe-inspiring sight. We spend some time soaking in the view, taking photos, and enjoying a well-deserved lunch before descending back to El Chaltén.

Another classic trek from El Chaltén is the hike to Laguna Torre, offering stunning views of Cerro Torre, another iconic peak in the Los Glaciares National Park. This is a slightly easier hike than Laguna de los Tres, taking around 6-8 hours round trip.

The trail leads us through valleys and along the Fitz Roy River, offering beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers. Laguna Torre, with its milky glacial waters and the jagged peaks of Cerro Torre reflected in its surface, is a truly magical place. The hanging glaciers clinging to Cerro Torre's slopes add to the dramatic scenery.

After two days of challenging hikes, we opt for a more relaxed day. Several shorter hikes are available around El Chaltén, offering beautiful views without the strenuous effort. The Chorrillo del Salto waterfall hike is a popular option, a relatively easy walk to a picturesque waterfall.

Alternatively, we can spend the day relaxing in El Chaltén, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the village, browsing the local shops, and reflecting on our Patagonian adventures.

We take a bus back to El Calafate, where we spend the night before our departure from El Calafate International Airport (FTE). The journey back offers one last chance to admire the vast Patagonian landscapes.

This is a blog post we wrote when visiting the Perito Moreno Glacier in 2017 and El Carafate.  We arrived from the boarder in Chile and loved the little town of El Calafate.  The Glacier was nothing short of spectacular!  One of the most amazing things we have experienced!

We know firsthand the area, and what to see and do!
