Utila Island Exploration - Renting a Motorbike, Learning to Ride And The North Side

Today was pretty cool. We woke up and started our PADI Open Water Course to become SCUBA certified! Today was just videos.  5 to be exact regarding everything from equipment to planning dives, and learned some science related to diving. It wasn't as bad as everyone said it was going to be. (everyone being the people who work here and some other divers) Utila is a huge dive destination. There are tons of shops, and schools to learn. Pretty much everyone here visiting (not the 6000 people who live here) are here for diving.

Riding To The Other Side Of The Island

We were done by about 1pm and did our tests after every video, and had the rest of the afternoon off. We went into town and rented a scooter. It was fun. We rode around and went down some dirt road to the only hill here in Utila called, Pumpkin Hill. We went down this rocky bumpy road just the two of us, until we saw the hill, then realized we'd have to climb it and we couldn't ride up the hill. (WE ARE DONE CLIMBING!!! for the rest of our trip) So we continued down the road, and all of a sudden, it opens up from the jungle to the north coast of the island! WOW very pretty. So we got out and played in the tide pools and just enjoyed the sun on an old log in the water. It was really nice.

Shelly's First Motorbike Lesson

We then rode to the Utila Airport (all of 2 planes there... both Cessnas) and Shelly learned to ride a scooter for the first time in her life. She did GREAT!!!! I had her practicing figure 8s to learn cornering, and then we did some breaking drills, and she picked it up great! I was proud. We sat there goofing off until the sun started to set and headed back to the dive center to watch it.

It is absolutely hot here. About 90 -95 with high humidity. And any chance we get to sit by the water and relax in it, we do it. So we dove off the dock and enjoyed the water until it got dark. The sunsets here in the Caribbean and in Utila are incredible every night!   Oh yeah the water is 80 degrees here! Great place! Went and got something to eat then called it a night. Tomorrow we start the pool dives with SCUBA equipment. We're excited!!
